DKE Toys Press Release: Lou Pimentel’s Influential Figures Too at Gallery1988

Charlie Brown
6″x9″ Original Watercolor Mounted on Silk-Screened Wood Panel with Vintage Style Action Figure

Hello Press and Friends,

Influential Figures Too by Lou Pimentel
Opens at Gallery1988 Saturday, January 8, 2022

For Influential Figures Too Lou Pimentel created 25 original water color paintings inspired by vintage action figures and pop culture icons. The complete show will be available for viewing and sale at gallery1988.com starting at 12pm Pacific on Saturday, January 8th. The gallery will also be open at the same time for in-person viewing and continuing through January 22nd during regular gallery hours.

Each water color ranges in size from 6″x9″ to 8-1/2″x11″. Paintings are mounted onto laser cut backer boards with a silk-screened wood back. Then classic vintage-style figures and blisters are mounted onto the art to make the final pieces.

Originally dubbed Vintage Gold, this show, curated by DKE Toys, is a continuation of the series that premiered at New York Comic Con in 2018 with the first 20 pieces. Followed by another 20 pieces for the 2019 NYCC. Jan 2021 Lou had his first show at Gallery1988 with Influential Figures.

“For the Vintage Gold series I traveled back in time to my childhood. I remember the feeling of walking down the toy aisle and seeing all the fun, bright packages that contained the figures I so desperately wanted. I wanted to channel that energy, and excitement into my paintings. I wanted the inner child in all of us to say I WANT THAT!!” -Lou Pimentel

Gallery1988: Since it’s opening in 2004, Gallery1988 has become one of the nation’s most talked about art galleries. Sitting on the world famous shopping mecca of Melrose Ave (now at 7308 Melrose), G1988 was opened by California natives Katie Sutton and Jensen Karp, and was the first pop-culture focused art gallery in the world, as well as a premiere venue to witness the rise of emerging artists before they break.

Lou Pimentel: Lou Pimentel is a watercolor artist based out of New York City, where he earned his BA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts. His work is bold, energetic, and colorful. As a child Lou spent countless hours drawing, or building forts and costumes out of cardboard. Those worry-free, simple days were golden for him. He aims to reconnect and record those feelings with his work. They are his time capsules, documenting his interests and feelings, past and present.

DKE Toys Press Release: DKE Plush Food Show at Woot Bear in San Francisco

Hello Press and Friends,
DKE Plush Food Show at Woot Bear in San Francisco
Saturday, December 4, 2021
Opening Reception 6-9pm

DKE Toys is pleased to announce the DKE Plush Food Show opening December 4 at Woot Bear in San Francisco, CA. DKE Toys founders Dov Kelemer and Sarah Jo Marks have opened the vaults of their personal toy archive. In 2006 Dov came home with a dozen plush donuts by plush designer Sewdorky. That was the genesis of a 10 year long journey of collecting food plush, curating STUFFED, a plush food show at Munky King in Los Angeles, and Sarah Jo being profiled by the LA Weekly as a plush food collector. More recently Sarah Jo curated a group show with Luke Chueh for Giant Robot called Let’s Eat. Now we are out of room and ready to share some of these pieces with the world. The show features hand made as well as factory made pieces from both Sarah Jo and Dov’s personal collection and examples of food related items that were distributed by DKE Toys over a dozen years of toy distribution. The show contains work from over 30 different artists.

About DesignerConFounded in 2005 by Ben Goretsky, DesignerCon brings together artists, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers in the designer toy / vinyl collectibles market and has grown to incorporate everything in the design world including apparel, plush, printing, sculpture, designer toys, and both fine and urban art. The steady growth DesignerCon has enjoyed correlates with its popularity in today’s art nerd, geek culture; collectors and designer toy lovers alike wait through the night for new releases, pre-orders for new artist collaboration apparel are sold out within minutes, and artists use the convention as an opportunity to announce exclusive releases and collaborations.

DKE Toys Press Release: DKE Toys Archive Auction at HA.com March 4th!

Pioneering Designer Toy Distributor and Collector Dov Kelemer
Opens the Vault For Heritage Auctions
DKE Toys makes history March 4 with major
stand-alone auction of designer toys

The DKE Toys Archive Auction is set to make history as master collector Dov Kelemer presents the world’s first stand-alone sale of designer and art toys from dozens of artists, designers, and creators. With bidding now open, and the live auction set for 11am PST/1pm CST March 4, this event is already considered a watershed sale by the toy collecting community.

The DKE Toys Archive event is filled with collectible works created from the inception of the designer toy scene in the early 2000s until today. This is not only a history of DKE Toys but a chronology of the designer toy movement. Its breadth only reflects Kelemer’s wish to give fellow collectors access to the hobby’s most sought-after works – among them 2002’s Invasion Kit #1: Albinos by Invader, which is considered a seminal piece by street-art collectors.

“Each of the 160 lots offered in this online event is a coveted highlight among collectors,” Kelemer says, “and includes some of the most renowned artists working in the scene.”

Look no further than Frank Kozik, who single-handedly revived the rock poster scene in the 90s, who turned his attention to art toys only to later become chief creative officer for Kidrobot. More than three dozen lots of his pieces are highlighted in this event, among them are complete sets of his landmark large scale bust series, Ho Chi Minh (set of 12, 2007), Dead Che (set of 13, 2010), Ludwig Van (14 color ways offered individually, 2008), Gipper (set of 13, 2012), and Big Army Man (set of 11, 2009). Here, too, collectors will find his painted fiberglass stool Stache Happy Labbit Stool (White), a recent piece, and one of his most iconic Kidrobot offerings, RedRum Dunny from 2008.

Kozik also appears among the artists involved in this jam session lasting six years, from 2004-2010: Circus Punks, 19 pieces designed by the likes of Ron English, Gary Baseman, Joe Ledbetter, Thomas Han, UPSO, SHAG, Reuben Rude, NYC Lase, Craola, Bob Dob, Tokidoki, Wonderland War and Voltaire. Circus Punks is nothing short of an all-star line-up of fabulous furry freaks.

Ron English is here in collaboration with The Showroom NYC for 2004’s MC Supersized (Glow in the Dark). That was the same year the artist created the character, based on a certain fast-food mascot, for director Morgan Spurlock’s documentary Supersize Me. In due time, bootlegs of MC Supersized became wildly popular in China; this one, of course, is the real deal.

Graffiti artist Futura, who once made subway stations his canvas and shared stages with the Clash during the band’s 1981 European tour, remains the rock star of the art toy world. Heritage is thrilled to include in this event one of each of his iconic painted vinyl pieces from 2005: Nosferatu. The auction will also feature Futura X adFunture’s circa-2008 collaboration FUTURA Tag.

Most of the pieces here are limited editions, among them 2005’s Andy Mouse (Red) from The Estate of Keith Haring X 360 Toy Group; The Sucklord’s deeply coveted two-piece Sucklord 600 (AFA graded). And of course no sale of collectible toys would be complete without an offering from KAWS, in this case 2007’s Darth Vader

“We expect the sale to break multiple world records,” says Leon Benrimon, Heritage Auctions’ Vice President of Modern and Contemporary Art. “Many of these items are coming up for the first – and, possibly, the last time – at auction.”

Bidding is now open for the The DKE Toy Archive event, with the live auction scheduled to begin at 11am PST/1pm CST March 4.

DKE Toys Press Release: Lou Pimentel’s Influential Figures at Gallery1988

King Kong
11″x14″ Original Watercolor Mounted on Silk-Screened Wood Panel
with Vintage Style Action Figure

Influential Figures by Lou Pimentel
Opens at Gallery1988 Friday, January 8, 2021

For Influential Figures Lou Pimentel created 37 original water color paintings inspired by vintage action figures and pop culture icons. The complete show will be available for viewing and sale at gallery1988.com starting at 12pm PST on Friday, January 8th. Following the virtual launch, at 1:30pm PST @galleries1988 is hosting an Instagram livestream virtual gallery tour with artist Lou Pimentel and Jensen Karp.

There will be no in-gallery viewings, it is exclusively online. Purchased paintings will be available for curbside pickup and will ship after January 23rd.

Each water color ranges in size from 6″x9″ to 11″x14″.

They are his time capsules, documenting his interests and feelings, past and present. www.loupimentel.com
